The Ten Major Planetary Cycles
- Synods of the five outer planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto

Against the global picture that emerges from taking all the main outer planets working together, let us now consider the underlying meaning of each of the ten planetary pairs as separate cycles of unfoldment. For it must be with these individual unfoldments of the "threads of eternity" in themselves, and as modulated through the charts of nations and their leaders, that we can begin to read the meaning and qualities of the time. In interpreting these synods we can draw on our general understanding of the planetary principles involved, and on observation and experience. Once again Andre Barbault supplies us with a wealth of information and experience in this area from his many studies and long years of observation. These are summarised in his books Les Astres et I'Histoire, Le Prognostic Experimentale en Astrologie and La Crise Mondiale de 1965. Before considering the planetary pairs let us summarise the essential qualities of the five outer planets in terms of their social psychology.

Jupiter: Tends to a relaxed liberalism, tolerance, goodwill and moderation, but also a certain moral certainty and religious intolerance. A desire to "play God" encourages paternalism, benevolence from a position of authority, noblesse oblige. Essentially expansive, optimistic, encourages legislation, or negatively legalistic wranglings and disputes, national inflatus and "imperialism".

Saturn: Seeks social order, structure, planning, regulations, controls, material and social security "from womb to tomb", imposes and enforces law and order. Can be strongly disciplinarian, intolerant, extremist, tends to be protectionist, isolationist, and to build "iron curtains".

Uranus: Individualistic, independent, self-reliant, encourages free enterprise, also seeks autonomy and is liable to rebellion and revolution. Tends to be right-wing, but equally to the "fascism of the left". Once in power can be autocratic and totalitarian.

Neptune: Universal and utopian tendencies, collective values, communal, communistic, collectivist, pluralist, left-wing. Can be politically unrealistic, seeking soft options, avoiding confrontation. This can encourage devious, underhand and subversive tactics, "entryism" and "fifth column" methods.

Pluto: The power of the masses, totalitarian, compulsive collective pressures, forces of elimination, regeneration and resurgence. Relates to emerging nations and nations in a state of renaissance and reconstruction. Also to fanaticism, to an obsession with impersonal, collective ideas and ideals. Can indicate the need to purge the body politic of old, deep-rooted problems. Constellated by a leader it can awaken compulsive instincts for power and dominance.

These can be combined into ten possible pairs. In descending order of cycle length, and hence theoretically in their overall powers as rulers of time, these are:

  • NE-PL approx. 492 years
  • UR-NE approx. 772 years
  • UR-PL approx. 127 years
  • SA-UR approx. 45 years
  • SA-NE approx. 36 years
  • SA-PL approx. 33 years
  • Ju-SA approx. 20 years
  • JU-UR approx. 14 years
  • JU-NE approx. l3 years
  • JU-PL approx. 12 years

A valuable way of thinking about these ten cycles is that devised by Leyla Rael Rudhyar. She divides them into three classes:

Class A (NE-PL, UR-NE, UR-PL) she considers "sound the low-frequency tones of evolutionary epochs, and their cycles develop their transformative themes".

Class B (SA-UR, SA-NE, SA-PL) she sees as "mid-frequency harmonies - or more often discords - resulting from the interplay or clash of transformative Class A, and conservative or inertial Saturn forces".

Class C (the four Jupiter synods) she sees as "the higher-frequency melodies of new discoveries, visions, ideals, and social trends unfold 'in sync' with these Jupiter-based synods ". Against this background we can look briefly at each synod and some of the theoretical ideas and empirical findings associated with each.

Neptune - Pluto

Various writers, including Barbault, Jayne, and Rudhyar, have pointed out the importance of this cycle in terms of major epochs of civilisation. Both planets have to do with the deep unconscious/super-conscious of the collective, an opening up to higher, transcendent collective ideas and ideals. We would suggest that in some sense they relate to the higher ideas and ideals of the time, and to the larger spiritual, cosmic, and human purposes which are coming into manifestation. As noted, this cycle sets the tone of the underlying and compelling aspirations of the time. The current long-term -60-phase, which remains within orb from c.1941-2035, can be seen as marking a period when real ideas and ideals can be increasingly set to work in the world. Rudhyar and Rael consider that five such cycles mark out a major 2,500-year period and that a new cycle began with the PL-0-NE of c.22 April 579 BCE. (Because of cumulative errors in the outer planet orbits the dates given for these should be treated with extreme caution!)

There can be no question that this period, reinforced by the UR -0- PL of 21 December 577 BCE/1 February 576 BCE and the UR-0-NE of l0 July/I8 October 576 BCE and 3 April 575 BC, was one of the most fertile and creative in recorded history. Pythagoras, Deutero-Isaiah, Buddha, and Lao Tze all suddenly sprang to life and light at this time, bringing a new vision and spiritual awareness into the world. As mentioned above, tables for all the major synods will be available soon. However, for those wishing to consider the possible correlates with this major synod now, the next conjunctions occurred c.9 July and c.14 October 85 BCE and c. 7 April 84 BCE. The next was c. 30 April 411 AD, which coincided with a UR-90-NE, c.28 July 409, 12 September, 29 October 410 and UR-90-PL 9 January, 11 September, 11 November 410, and all joined by a triple JU-0-SA on 29 August and 3 November 4ll AD and 12 March 412. This coincided with Alaric's sacking of Rome in August 410 AD and the general collapse of the Roman Empire. The next occurred c. 19 July and 29 October 904 AD and c. 18 April 905 AD. The millenarian sentiments at the turn of the fourteenth century were probably accentuated by the conjunction c. 11 June 1 398, and 13 January and 26 February 1399, which was however a period that saw the final flowering of the Middle Ages. The most recent conjunctions were in 1891-2 in 8 and 9 degrees Gemini, considered by many to be the seed time of the present accelerating move towards a global culture.


Remarking on the importance of this 172-year cycle for the unfoldment of civilisations, Jayne notes that after twenty-one conjunctions, or 3,600 years, that the UR-0-NE returns within 6 degrees of the first conjunction of the series. If this cycle is divided into six sub-periods of 600 years each, we have the great Chaldean Naros Cycle. DeVore goes on to say about this 600-year cycle that "Naros milestones are marked by the following historical dates:

  • 576 BC, the birth of Buddha (Buddhism), Mahavira (Jainism), Pythagoras, and the activity of Lao-Tze (Taoism);
  • AD 25, the mission of Christ, (Christianity);
  • AD625, the Hegira of Muhammad;
  • 1225, St Francis (vital for Catholicism);
  • 1825, birth of Bab and Baha'u'llah (co-founders of Bahaism) and of Mary Baker Eddy (Christian Science )

The last UR-0-NE have occurred in November 1308, three times in 1478/9, in 1650 and in 182l. The next will begin to form up during 1992, being within 2 degrees of orb for much of the year, and coming exact on 2 February 1993 in 19 CP 33. Rael Rudhyar cites Cheryl Martin on this cycle, saying that she (Martin) considers that the recent Uranus-Neptune cycles work closely with the Neptune-Pluto cycles, a view which Barbault has independently voiced. Thus Martin sees the 1478/9-1650 cycle as "phase one" of the 1398/9 Neptune-Pluto cycle, and relates this combined interaction with the discovery and initial settlement of the Americas, the rise of Humanism, the Renaissance and the Reformation in European culture. She goes on to observe that the Mogul Empire of the Ottoman Turks reached its height during the sixteenth century, as did the Mogul Empire in India. The "phase two" Neptune-Uranus cycle of 1650-182I is related by Martin to the period of the Enlightenment and European classicism. In Britain the last cycle could be said to have died with the execution of Charles I on 30 January 1649 and the new to have begun with the establishment of the Commonwealth under Cromwell. This cycle included the American and French Revolutions and ended with the Death of Napoleon in I 821 , the independence of Spain and Portugal's former South and Central American colonies, and the acceleration of the Industrial Revolution. The "phase three" cycle, which we are still in, Martin considers to relate to the transition from industrial to post-industrial society. Rael Rudhyar indicates that the coming conjunction, and the approach to it, are likely to focus on Central and South America. She also points out that this Capricorn emphasis during the last part of this century is further reinforced by the two JU -0- NE of 1984 and 1997, and the three SA-0-NE of 1989, which all occur in the sign. This she relates to a period of stabilisation of governmental institutions, and increasing conservatism. From an empirical approach Barbault has related the 1821 synod in Europe, beginning in 1821, to the growth of Capitalism, and to the interaction between capital (Uranus) and labour (Neptune), between the forces of authority/conservatism and liberalism, Capitalism and Communism (the development of Communism itself he relates to the Saturn-Neptune cycle), and to the process of industrialisation which was gathering momentum in the western world. This finding is very much in agreement with what H. S. Green had already found at the beginning of this century. The "good" aspect between these, he says "produces harmony between rulers and ruler, the higher and lower classes... promotes reform and changes in the nation". About the "bad" aspect he says "The rulers and the ruled may be at variance".

Returning to Barbault, he finds that following through the Uranus-Neptune cycle, each main phase is marked by appropriate interactions between these different interests, groups and ideas. The first decade after 182l saw the enormous impact of machinery and the emergence of an industrial proletariat as distinct from the growing bourgeoisie and business classes. In 1847, at the -45-, a consciousness of this class divide was crystallised with the publication of the Communist Manifesto. At the -90- phase in 1867- 70 antagonism in Europe between liberal and conservative elements culminated in the Franco-Prussian war and the establishment of the German Empire. By the -120- in 1883 Europe had settled down to an amicable stage of detente with generally co-operative relations between capital and labour and improving social legislation. This was not to last and the -180- phase of 1907 saw the repolarisation of Europe between the liberal-oriented Russo-Anglo-French alliance against the Central Powers of Germany-Austria-Italy. This polarisation was reactivated when Jupiter joined the warring Uranus at the outbreak of World War One. The incoming -120- of 1939-42 saw the astonishing reconciliation of the Stalin-Hitler pact. No sooner had this dissolved in 1941 than the Allies joined with Russia as equally unlikely bedfellows. The -90- of 1952-55 coincided with the polarisation of Moscow and Washington and the depth of the cold war and the McCarthyite witch hunts in the USA. Again at the incoming -60- during 1965-67 we see a relaxation of east-west tensions and increasing cooperation. On this basis we can perhaps look to the next -0- in 1992/3 as marking the real beginning of the 'New Age Economics' of which Barry Lynes is such an impassioned advocate.


This 127-year cycle appears to be important for the radical restructuring of peoples and nations. Ebertin describes it as "building again upon the ruins of the old". The process is not necessarily as immediately drastic as this would imply. But the main incoming phases of this cycle marked out very precisely some of the main destructive and reconstructive phases in the development of Germany between 1938 and 1955 and the main phases of the Vietnamese/S.E. Asian transformations which came to a crisis under the last such conjunction during 1965 /66. Barbault has also noted a strong relationship between this cycle and the emergence of Japan. On the scientific and intellectual plane the 1965-66 conjunction in Virgo correlates closely with the emergence of the electronics, computer, and micro-processor industry. This may well be an indication that this next Uranus-Pluto cycle will focus more on intellectual revolutions than on physical ones. Non-astrological observers now talk of the pre- and post-1965 generations, i.e. those for whom the world of computers is still essentially strange and those who have grown up with electronic wizardry as part of their natural environment. Undoubtedly this Uranus-Pluto generation will provide the systems and linguistic analysts and logicians who will develop artificial intelligence, the next information technology revolution, and all that this implies for mankind's evolution. Previous recent UR-0-PL occurred during 1598/9, 1710/11, and 1850/1.


As a result of studies covering 1625 to the present time, Barbault identifies this 45-year cycle as a right-wing and essentially conservative/authoritarian process which emphasises the politics of Order. He finds it strongly associated with the development of "imperialist" tendencies and with capitalism. This agrees with astro-economic analysis which points to this cycle as a crucial one in the ebb and flow of investment and production in heavy industry, which has for a long time been dominated by the USA. In broader terms it can also be seen to relate to the practical "earthing" of brilliant ideas, insights, inventions, reforms, and so on. Thus, for example, as we shall see under Jupiter-Uranus below there was an almost exact SA-120-UR at the time of the launching of the first Sputnik. Likewise Saturn was just past the incoming -144- phase to UR-0-ru at the moment that Apollo XI was successfully launched to the Moon (also exact was SA-135-PL). The very strong connections between this cycle and the Middle East are dealt with in a forthcoming ISCWA publication. For example Israel was conceived under a SA-0-UR. The Balfour Declaration and Allenby's entry into Jerusalem, and the Palestine mandate all occurred at the -180- phase, the latter within two days of exactitude. Israel was born at the exact septile. Most of the crises in her history have occurred close to critical phases of this cycle, and/or the Satum-Pluto cycle, which is also a dominant one. Likewise Egypt's history correlates closely with this cycle. The 1922 Republic was proclaimed with Saturn rising in an incoming, applying tri-septile to Uranus (cf. Israel's septile). The 1953 Republic was established at the outgoing -90- phase. Sadat was born with SA-180-UR. He was assassinated just five days after the exact incoming SA-45-UR. The last SA-0-UR occurring on 3 May 1942, 1.16pm GMT set for Cairo, is still of great importance in considering the unfoldment of this area.


Green saw this synod as benefiting democracy, political changes and reforms. Barbault considers this to be the paramount cycle which governs the development of socialism/Communism. He points out that the SA-0-NE 1846 (and UR-45-NE of 1847) was followed by the publication of the Communist Manifesto, and that the main phases of this cycle trace the development and the establishment of the main European socialist parties around the 1882 SA-O-NE, and then the Russian Revolution in 1917, immediately following the next SA-0-NE. The SA-0-NE of 1952/3 saw the death of Stalin and the beginning of the expansion of Soviet communist influence out into Africa and the Third World. Russia became involved in Afghanistan, now described as "Russia's Vietnam" at the incoming -90- phase in December 1979 shortly after the Sun came -O-NE and -90-SA, whilst the Polish crisis blew up under this same aspect close to the time that the Sun came -180-NE and -90-SA, and Gierek was obliged to resign. Most recently the SA-60-NE on 14 October 1982 was part of a pattern of factors which can be related to the death of Brehznev. The SA-45-NE occurring on 10 January 1984, and quickly followed by JU-0-NE (another "socialist" cycle) on 19 January, is likely to mark the focus of another highly critical period of some months for the Soviet Union. After this the three conjunctions of 1989 in Capricorn are likely to mark another major and crucially important stage in mankind's social development.

Curiously enough it has been observed that the British Royal Family has responded very strongly to this same cycle for at least the past century. This is perhaps indicative of its relationship to self-sacrifice and dedication to higher ideals. Leyla Rael Rudhyar says of this synod: "The cycle of these two planets refers most positively to the dissolution (Neptune) of whatever has become negatively crystallised (Saturn), and to the 'descent', as it were, of new, inspiring collective images". She notes its relationship to Marxism but also to the Baha'i movement which was also founded at the time of the 1846 conjunction, which envisions a global world-order (Saturn) based on revelation (Neptune). Regarding the cycle beginning in 1952-3 she says that this "can be interpreted as referring to the 'religion', (Neptune) of paternalistic materialism (Saturn) that has been guiding political, economic, and social development. It coincided with the formal conclusion of peace treaties following World War Two, the explosion of the first hydrogen bomb, and the death of Josef Stalin. " To this we may add, in the light of the above remark. that it also coincided with the death of George VI of England, and the accession of Queen Elizabeth II, and the beginning of an important new phase in the evolution of the British monarchy.


As I write this we are approaching the beginning of a new Saturn-Pluto cycle which began on 8 November 1982. This 33-year cycle appears to have a great deal to do with emerging nations and very deep cultural transformations, purgations and "resurrections". In this respect Barbault relates its activities in this century to decolonisation and the development of cultural structures. It is a remarkable fact that India and Pakistan gained their independence only days after the last SA -0- PL on 11 August 1947. Here we have ancient peoples (Saturn) entering a deep inner purgation (Pluto). (The Indian sub-continent was plunged into appalling rioting, bloodshed, civil war and sectarian violence as soon as independence came.) This closely parallels the experience of the ancient (Saturn) people of Israel who declared their unilateral independence in 1948 with Moon and Mars bracketing the SA-0-PL in the tenth house, and were immediately plunged into open war with their Arab compatriots. Israel's history since has closely followed the subsequent phases of this cycle, most recently with the war in Lebanon (1982 13) at the -0- phase. Likewise China under Mao began to emerge during this conjunction though the Republic was not proclaimed until 1 October 1949 when Saturn had moved out of orb. Leyla Rael Rudhyar points out that since the previous SA-O-PL had occurred in l9l4-15 in early Cancer, this and the 1947 conjunction spanned both world wars. She goes on... "which some historians lump together and call 'the second Thirty Year War'. What is called the first Thirty Year War occurred in Europe between 1618 and 1648, under a Saturn-Pluto cycle which spanned 1617 to 1648." As she goes on to say, such conjunctions do not always portend war. However, we can see that the intensely tough, purgative qualities of Saturn-Pluto can indicate periods when there is in some way a need to "get back to basics", to the "skeleton" of things as it were. Thus critical phases of the Saturn-Pluto can lead to seeing things in black and white, so that only some kind of drastic action will suffice. In so far as Pluto has to do with collective power the Saturn-Pluto cycle would seem to be related to the unfoldment of the ordered exercise and administration (or imposition) of 2020 collective, compulsive, power. Barbault observes that the -90- phase seems to relate to periods of "crisis of authority". It is interesting to note that the Brezhnev era ended almost exactly at the SA-0-PL of 8 November 1982, which followed hot on the heels of the SA -60- NE of l4 October 1982, another indication of transformative processes within the Communist world.


This cycle, of almost exactly twenty years from conjunction to conjunction, has always been considered of the greatest importance in shaping the course of history. These two planets used to be known as the "Great Chronocrators", or rulers of the ages. Their cycle can be considered the ground base of human development which marks the interaction between the perception of ideas, potentialities, possibilities (Jupiter) and their manifestation in the concrete material world (Saturn) (cf. the Saturn-Neptune cycle which is related to a similar process at a higher level). As noted under the interpretation of the conjunction this pair has a great deal to do with the development and evolution of social structures and a sense of corporate national identity. Barbault makes a compelling case for the dominance of this cycle in the unfoldment of European history so that each phase in this cycle, though relatively short, appears to mark out a relatively clear pattern of development year after year. The Jupiter-Saturn cycle was of course the mainstay of the ancients' cyclical theory of history. Although in itself a relatively short cycle the series of JU-0-SA forms an intriguing pattern as the conjunction occurs for approximately 240 years in any one element, so that they complete a cycle of the zodiac in about 960 years. The twenty-year synod was known technically as Minima or Specialis, their 240-year cycle as Media or Tigonalis and their full cycle as Maxima or Climacteria. The transition of the conjunction from one element to another - the "Mutation Conjunction" - has always been considered to be of particular importance, marking a major shift in emphasis and orientation in the world. There was a Great Mutation in Fire on 8 December 1603 in 8' Sagittarius which has been related to the subsequent colonisation of America due to religious (Sagittarius) oppression. The Great Mutation of 26 January 1842, 5.21 am GMT when the conjunction moved into Earth is often related to the development of materialism and mankind's increasing mastery over the material world which has followed. Despite the "maverick" JU-0-SA in Air in 1981 this -0- is considered to last until the Great Nutation in Air - about AD 2060.

Under this cycle mention has to be made of perhaps the most famous alleged cycle correlations - the US "presidential death cycle". The facts are that since 1840 every president elected during the year of a JU-0-SA has died in office. The significance of this was in fact pointed out at the time of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, by an astrologer Dr L. D. Broughton who, it is alleged, having noted that William Henry Harrison (elected in 1840) and Lincoln (elected in 1860) had died in office, then went on to predict that every president elected in a year ending in 0 would die in office, down to 1960. His stated reason for this highly prophetic prediction was that the JU-0-SA would occur in Earth signs every twenty years through until 1960. In an interesting study by Kelsey Richfield of all eight presidents who have died in office (one, Zachary Taylor, was not elected in a "zero" year) he concludes that the JU-O-SA in Earth is an inadequate explanation for this pattern since in none of the Saturn/Jupiter conjunctions from 1900-2020 cases does the conjunction actually make any particularly significant contacts with the USA chart. In saying as he does that the Ju-0-SA "were not only not causative of the presidential deaths, but not even related" he is probably overstating a position. The study of Kennedy's assassination is indicative that there is at least some connection here. Though Richfield's findings are not directly related to the JU-0-SA his analysis is sufficiently interesting in its own right to be mentioned here. In sum he found that, using the 7GE35 rising US chart rather than the Sagittarius rising chart at present preferred by the writers of this book, in seven out of eight cases there was a square between the president's Mars (3 cases), Saturn (2 cases), SO/SA (1 case), NN (1), Moon (1), to the USA's Mars (2), NN (4) Moon (2). Furthermore he found that in almost every case there was a progressed aspect close to time in the USA chart involving the Moon and Mars. Thus he found progressed MO was -180-US MA (3 cases), -90-MA (1), MA-180-MO (l). Of the other two cases one showed progressed SA-120-MA, but - 90- the president's Saturn, and the other showed progressed MO-9O-ME and progressed ME-90-MA. He ends with the ominous comment that the US-MO is again -90- MA mid-September 1983. This said it is clear that in astrology we are constantly dealing with a whole intermeshing web of such cycles and it would seem in terms of first principles extremely unlikely that any one or two such factors would be adequate. Such events can be expected to echo and resonate through a wide range of charts, as we shall see.


About fourteen years long, this cycle appears to be very much to do with the growth and awakening of human consciousness, and the purposeful extension and transcendence of horizons. It combines aspiration and effort and as such relates to the possibilities for progress and furthering the evolution of man. It encourages a perception of deeper potentialities, poses questions, opens up opportunities. It encourages a growth of the Promethean spirit of rebellion and self-will, and a spirit of individual and collective optimism and enterprise. This seems to be one of the key cycles of the "free-market economy" measuring the buoyancy of the markets. As such Barbault considers it one of the predominantly capitalist-oriented cycles. He also sees it as an important factor for rebellion against the status quo, whatever that may be at the time. Writing on the conjunction phase he says, "This gives rise to power, ambition, audacity, risk-taking, excessively extremist behaviour. In a constructive phase it is a most powerful agent for change and progress. In a society in crisis it can cause highly a volatile situations to erupt without warning and an atmosphere of acute tension. In this state it has a particularly dangerous 'war mongering', potential".


This cycle has a strongly idealistic, humanitarian and ideological quality about it. It seems to be related to the unfoldment of idealistic and religious belief systems, and as such its hard-angle aspects can often relate to sectarian quarrels, political differences and "religious wars". The -90- phase seems to be particularly prone to precipitate action to fight for a particular idea, as for example in the chart for Franco's uprising in Spain, in the last Portuguese revolution, or Ataturk's Turkey. Economically it can produce periods of boom and optimism, but also "pie in the sky" plans and rampant inflation, if not well earthed. Barbault relates this particularly to the socialist economies of the Eastern bloc, and more specifically to the destiny of France, which has been locked in step with this synod for many cycles now. Thus the Fourth Republic was born at the conjunction in 1945 and elections gave a strong leftwing majority. At the -45- in 1947 De Gaulle rallies the anti-Communist vote, creating a major split and polarisation with Communists, the harvests are poor, and a wave of strikes exacerbates the situation. At the -60- in 1948, the Third Force emerges, uniting the middle ground and producing a brief period of economic stability. The -90- phase in 1949 sees a new economic crisis and the resignation of President Queuille. With the -120- in 1950 there is a general Franco-German rapprochement and the USA pledges 2 billion dollars of financial aid. With the -180- in 1951-52 the Communists lose ground to the conservatives but a series of resignations and terrorist violence in Morocco and Tunisia create a new sense of crisis. The -135- in May /June coincides with a ministerial crisis and a general disruption of the nation. At the 120- in 1953- 54 the economy begins to pick up and Mendes-France ends the war in Indo-China. The -90- from mid-1954 to mid-1955 is a time of insurrection and instability in French North Africa which creates governmental crisis and Mendes-France resigns. The -60- at the end of 1955 sees peace in Morocco and the formation of a relatively stable government. But at the -45-in autumn of 1956 the government splits and there are setbacks over the Suez crisis. With the conjunction of 1958 comes the final crisis, with the threat of civil war over Algeria. General de Gaulle takes over as premier and on 28 September a new Constitution for the Fifth Republic was approved, and inaugurated on 5 October under the new UR-O-NE!

It should be pointed out that with his insight into the dominance of this cycle, and of the Sun-Jupiter cycle (see below) for France, Barbault was able very much to "call the changes" during the Fourth Republic often within a few days, and unequivocally predict the final crisis at the end of the cycle.
