The connection between the cosmos and consciousness has fascinated and inspired human beings for thousands of years. It has given us rich mythologies and cosmologies. Is the cosmos alive and intelligent? Or is consciousness the bi-product of brain chemistry? The question before us concerns the purpose of consciousness. What is the point of being aware of ourselves, our world and the cosmos? Ultimately, what is the purpose of life? How and why do we explore consciousness? Is consciousness simply a survival tactic? Or is it something more than this? In what states of mind can we look at our minds: the detached position of the scientific observer, the ecstatic state of the pagan enthusiast, the psychotropic condition of the inner traveller or through the enchanted eyes of the observer of the starry heavens? If our universe can be seen as the spontaneous reflex of a cosmos wishing to see itself, what is the function of consciousness and how do we investigate its various potentials and possibilities? This conference will address the twin themes of cosmos and consciousness through the arts, psychology, poetry, science, mythology, archaeology, pharmacology, history and, philosophy.
Speakers will include: Freya Aswynn, Françoise Barbira-Freedman, Brian Bates, Dr Philippa Berry, Dr Susan Blackmore, Dr William Bloom, Bernadette Brady, Chas Clifton, Jude Currivan, Erik Davis, Dr. Rick Doblin, Stephen Fitzpatrick, Piers Gibbon, Dr Liz Greene, Dr Susan Greenwood, Rob Hand, Dr Charles Jencks, Dr Andy Letcher, Dave Luke, Robin Mathews, Dr Kelly Morris, Dr Serena Roney-Dougal, Hilary Rose, Anja Saunders, Alexander Shulgin, Ann Shulgin, Julian Vayne, Prof. Max Velmans, Hattie Wells. The Association of Young Astrologers has launched their website and are running online classes, an online forum for astrology students of all ages and online mentoring groups led by senior astrologers such as Robert Blaschke. Their membership is growing and they are in the process of registering as a non-profit organisation. They're based in the USA, but accept members from all over the world. The whole thing sounds like an excellent idea to me. Their website is: www.youngastrologers.com
An Introduction to Medieval Methods of Solar Returns
The Astrological Association is proud to present a Special Day Seminar with Rob Hand
Date: Sunday 27 June 2004, 10.30am-4.30 pm
Venue: the Sophia Centre, Bath Spa University College, Newton Park, Newton St. Loe, BA2 9BN.
The profits from this workshop will go to the AA Building Fund.
Rob Hand is the legendary author of seminal text books such as Planets in Transit and Planets in Composite. Famous for his work in the rediscovery of ancient astrological techniques, this workshop includes his latest research. He has never written about this work and this will be his first presentation of it in the UK.
In Medieval astrology, the solar return, or solar revolution as it usually called, was an elaborate technique thoroughly integrated with other predictive techniques. This workshop will examine some of the basic methods employed by medieval astrologers for doing solar returns. These are quite a bit more elaborate than modern methods and also quite different from both the methods of doing both tropical and sidereal (and also precession corrected) solar returns. There are have been to date no modern books on these traditional methods.
Cost: £55 for the day. £10 discount for delegates at the Sophia Centre conference in June - and at the AA Conference in September. Refreshments are included but please note lunch is not provided on the day, so please bring a packed lunch with you. Advance booking is essential as places are limited.
