THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS AND CONTINUES TO SIGN THIS PETITION
The Astrological Association has sent an email to the individual for has applied to Trademark ‘AstroCartoGraphy’ in the EU. We kindly asked her to withdraw her application to the EU and to relinquish her French registration. Regrettably, we did not receive a reply.
The Association is currently taking legal advice on the best steps forward to attempt to have the EU application struck down before a decision is made (as the application remains pending) or overturned if the application is successful. The window of time for objections closed earlier this year. To do this, we will be submitting the petition information along with significant evidence demonstrating EU and international free usage and generic terminology of the word ‘AstroCartoGraphy’. This evidence can also be potentially used to overturn/cancel the French Trademark registration, of the same word, which was issued last year.
We are continuing to gather signatures on the petition, as well as reaching out to national organisations around the world, and particularly those who have members, attendees, students and customers that reside within the EU.
For organisations, schools and businesses who wish to submit information which would support our claim please email petition@astrologicalassociation.com
Thank you all for your continuing support.
The Astrological Association
AstroCartoGraphy Petition
Dear Astrological Community,
We need your help!
It has been brought to the attention of the Astrological Association that recent steps have been taken to register the term “AstroCartoGraphy” as a trademark within the European Union. An EUIPO application was filed on 12 December 2025 and is currently listed as pending. The trademark was successfully registered in France on 14 November 2025 (applied for on 4 July 2025).
As practitioners and students of astrology, we understand that “AstroCartoGraphy” is a foundational, descriptive term for the discipline of locational astrology. Since its development in the 1970s, this terminology has served as a vital, common-use descriptor for professionals, researchers, and software developers worldwide and has been widely used internationally for many decades. Although originally associated with Jim Lewis and his work, it subsequently came into common use among astrologers, authors, teachers, researchers, publishers, and practitioners around the globe, and the term has been used continuously in books, magazines, conferences, educational courses, and professional consultations by numerous independent practitioners.
The Astrological Association views any attempt to restrict the use of this term as an attempt to privatise a shared professional heritage. We believe that such terminology should remain in the public domain, ensuring that all astrologers can continue to describe their services and practices without fear of legal impediment or the burden of licensing fees.
We are in the process of attempting to object to the EU application (and are taking advice, as the window of time to object has expired) and also to seek to reverse the French registration.
We need your help to show support for the Association’s aims, which include collaborating with the wider astrological community, lending our support to our European friends and groups, and safeguarding the future of the term AstroCartoGraphy and other generic astrological terms.
Please register your support by signing the petition below. Your personal details will only be used for the purpose of this petition.
We are stronger standing together, and we remain committed to upholding the integrity of astrology and the generic terminology it has generated and continues to generate, without commercialising it.
Yours sincerely,
The Astrological Association
