19:00 A Shift in Time Chris Mitchell
Pope Gregory XIII introduced calendar change in the 16th century, but Eurosceptic England wasn’t having any truck with that sort of foreign nonsense, and waited nearly two centuries before begrudgingly following suit (1752), skipping 11 days in the process. Contrary to popular myth, there weren’t riots in the street, but traders won a small victory against bureaucracy. Find out why the calendar needed to be changed, why historic charts can be a minefield, why Lilly’s charts sometimes seem to be a whole year out, and why your tax return has the bizarre end date of 5 April (hint: it’s to do with the Virgin Mary).
Biography: Chris has a PhD from the University of Leicester on the topic of medieval astrology, is a tutor on the MA Cultural Astronomy and Astrology course at the University of Wales, and holds a diploma in Medieval Astrology from Astrologos. He has been actively involved in promoting and teaching astrology for 20 years, is on the board of the Astrological Association, and has given talks to groups and conferences in Europe and the US. He helps co-ordinate the growing number of local astrological groups throughout England. He is the author of England’s First Astrology Book – Roger of Hereford’s Judicial Astrology.
20:00 Summer Party
